New Michigan Laws Goals to Broaden Statewide Tuition-free School Program to Adults

The Michigan Reconnect program – launched final yr – is open to adults over age 25 who need to return to high school to earn their first affiliate diploma or expert trades certification. It affords free or discounted tuition to these accepted.

Home Payments 6129 and 6130 – bipartisan payments sponsored by state Reps. Ben Frederick, R-Owosso, and Sarah Anthony, D-Lansing, and launched this week – would open up this system to adults ages 21-24 to assist deal with schooling gaps brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Michiganders who return to high school as adults have distinctive wants and prior life experiences that must be acknowledged by their establishments,” Frederick stated in a press release. “The purpose is to permit individuals to obtain an employment-relevant credential with minimal or no debt, to allow them to efficiently advance their careers.”

Frederick – chair of the Home’s funds subcommittee on neighborhood schools and better schooling – allotted $155 million in federal COVID reduction funding for the growth of Michigan Reconnect within the Home’s funds proposal for the following fiscal yr.
